During the 1970s, I started writing new music for
vibraphones, pianos, percussion and keyboards.
This early music grew from a happy accident: creating melodic
lines on the vibraphone in 4/4 and then walking down the
street thinking of another line which turned out to be in 3/4.
When I recorded them together on my 4-track tape recorder I
loved the sound of 2 different lines going in and out of synch
with each other.
This going in and out of synch music was the beginning of my
composing style and inspired me to write Bhakti and keep
writing and performing this new music with my own ensemble.

In the early 1980s Jaroslav Kovaricek at ABC FM in Adelaide
recorded and produced Waves, Weaving, Bhakti, Measure
against Measure, Sticks and Whirling Dance for radio airplay.
I have included 4 of these compositions here. Throughout
the 1980s and 90s I kept working with my ensemble
developing further, cyclic rythmic systems, isometric
patterning and meter against meter music eventually creating
longer and longer lines of more emotional depth. From this
period came Starting from Zero for 2 pianos and vibraphone
and the solo piano work There is Nothing but Everything.

These compositions show the beginning of a way of
composing that was very different from what was going on
around me musically at the time. The challenge was to find my
own musical voice working intuitively with the beauty of these
natural wood, metal, skin and hammered string sounds.
The music I am writing now for voices, woodwinds and
ensemble started from this limited yet rich palette. I had no
idea when I wrote Bhakti in 1973 where my music would
progress to - from the viewpoint of 2001 it all seems many
happy accidents.
