Robert Lloyd's music has been described by
the New York Times as "a shimmering driving
score". From his early beginnings in the 1970s,
writing keyboard and percussion music using
minimal scale systems, Robert Lloyd has come
to be an internationally performed composer
of a rich and varied music in several different
genres, including concert, dance, multi-media
and theatre.

Born in Adelaide, he studied percussion at Sydney Conservatorium with Alard
Maling and later in Adelaide with Richard Smith and Ryzard Pusz. He also studied
orchestration, world music, keyboards and theatre at Adelaide University, receiving
a Bachelor of Music Education in 1984. He is currently working towards a Doctorate
of Creative Arts at the University of Western Sydney.

Robert has collaborated with New York choreographer Molissa Fenley on "Feral"
with Ohio Ballet in 1986 and "Nullarbor" at the Joyce Theatre, New York 1993
with stone sculpture by Richard Long. He has also collaborated with Melbourne
choreographer Nanette Hassell on "Open Weave": Music "Bold New Buildings" with
Australia Dance Theatre at the Adelaide Festival Centre in 1987 and 1993.

He has received grants from the Australia Council, the South Australian Government,
the Regional Arts Festival Fund, Federal Government, Canberra and the NSW
Government. During 1975, he studied Balinese Gamelan in Peliatan, Bali with Wayan
Gandra and Ugung Raka. In 1996, he performed "Earthed" and "Boo Bam Music" at the
International Drum Festival in Jakarta.

Major commissions include "Sticks" and "Measure against Measure" for the Darwin
ensembles Drum-Drum and Arafura Ensemble, music for "Waterborne" with Entracte
Theatre at Sydney's Maritime Museum; and "Tokyo Two", "Sense" and "All that Flows"
for Open City, Sydney.

For specific projects, Robert has put together ensembles of highly skilled musicians
to play his music, including concerts at Annandale Galleries in 1993/94, St Laurence
Arts Centre in 1995 and the Goethe-Institut in 1996.

In 1999, the world premier of "Time Being Time" for 2 sopranos, strings, percussion
and voices on computer was performed at the Supreme Court Building by Arafura
Ensemble in Darwin during the Saltwater Peoples Festival with texts by Zen master
Dogen and the 12th Century Greek philosopher Heraklitos. During 2000, Robert was
commissioned to write "Song for Five Continents" in collaboration with German artist,
Peter Dittmar for flute, viola, bass clarinet and percussion, to be played during
the 2000 Sydney Olympics at the Goethe-Institut.

Since 1995, Robert has taught part-time at the Eora Centre TAFE and Sound and Multi-
media in the Electronic and Temporal Arts Studio at Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney
University.

Robert's current work in theatre and multi-media has inspired the music for the ABC
radio commission "The Cinema of Solitude" on the French film director Robert Bresson.
For this program Robert wrote new piano works and developed soundscapes with texts
in collaboration with writer John Conomos and producer Brent Clough. During 2001,
Robert's small ensemble version of "Time being Time" premiered at the Sydney Opera
House with the German duo Trio a Due, and a new commission "Simplicity" with texts
by the sculptor Constantin Brancusi. He also wrote music for the opening ceremony of
the Arafura Games in Darwin, performed by the Arafura Ensemble and Drum-Drum.

He is currently working on "The Way of Solomon" for soprano, alto, tenor, bass,
strings, percussion and multi-track voices on computer, with digital images of writing
and texts from Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs.

"Nullarbor", Robert's 1993 dance score, was featured in Molissa Fenley's performance
at the London Southbank Festival in 1994. His work "Sticks" toured Germany with the
Adelaide percussion ensemble, PercusSON in 2000.

During January 2002, John Schaefer featured Robert's new CD, "robert lloyd", on his
